Mmmm...see I was going to reccomend Frengers...but thats just personal preference I guess! I think they slipped my mind because I've ALWAYS associated them with PRR so kind of assume they're a bit of a given, which is no longer the case because it's quite a while since they toured together now. Would love them to again though, can't wait for Mew's new album to be finished and for them to tour again, they're fantastic live.

Probably a Kites person myself, though Frengers is very very close. Frengers feels more like a collection of very good songs, whereas Kites is more a full album of amazingness.

This is a PRR forum, and so you might well want to call it an electro/rock forum these days: we're a prog forum as much as we're a hip-hop forum... and I can't see Jon & Co deciding to whip out the bling and collaborating with Fiddy on the next album... ;D Absolutely. While I can see the prog elements in The Dark Third, if you want to get into classifications, we've already established in other threads that I think there will be fairly little that will be described as 'prog' on Amor Vincit Omnia... More's the pity. What, for me, differentiates PRR from the also-rans of 'new' music is their genuine cross-genre appeal. A complete departure from their innovate prog-style sound would, I suspect, disenchant a significant number of fans. Personally I will likely enjoy AVO even if it is electro/rock, but I know many who might well drift away from the band's output.

Personally I will likely enjoy AVO even if it is electro/rock, but I know many who might well drift away from the band's output. Well, their loss, is what I'd say to that. I'd hope that for any fans who weren't happy with PRR's new direction and chose to drift away from the band, there'd be as many new fans (maybe from a different background) discovering PRR and enjoying their music. Regardless, it looks pretty clear in what direction the wind's blowing in regard to how PRR are going to sound in the near future, and as a forum we'll be hear to discuss the band whether they're churning out prog, electro, rock or UK garage albums. Though I suspect the latter is a bit of a long shot! As a personal opinion, I do think people get a bit hung up on genres though: you either like a band's music or you don't, is how I see it. If PRR lose fans with AVO because the fans genuinely don't like the music on the album then that's fair enough and can't be helped, but I wouldn't be able to understand someone's reasons if they decided to ditch PRR because the band was perceived to be no longer 'prog' or whatever other meaningless labels have been applied to them in the past.

I'm reluctant to carry on the discussion about genres, but surely the word "progressive" indicates some kind of progression? Whilst I think the debut is an almost perfect album, I'd hate for PRR to churn out the same album twice or more (think of AC/DC!).
Also, I listened to what I could of Mew (from MySpace and Last.fm) and none of it really appealed to me. The vocal style I found slightly annoying and there just weren't enough memorable melodies to my ears...

Thing with 'bands similar to PRR' is that, if I'm honest, I don't actually think there are any. Not similar enough. Like I know lots of people would jump in and say Porcupine Tree but I don't see it, I don't think they are similar, just like although I reccomended Fields, I don't think they are similar to PRR, they just use some of the same elements.

My two main suggestions are Annuals and Sylvie, both of whom I saw open for Minus the Bear in November. Sylvie had one song called "Common Art" that I thought was really cool. Annuals is probably the better band, though. www.myspace.com/annualswww.myspace.com/sylviemusicAlso, Mew is awesome.

Hmmm....I'll check it out, but sylvie sounds interesting because it might be a reference to the same poet that PRR reference in Willows and In Aurelia (and the whole Dark Third concept).
And yes, as BA says, I'm pretty sure that PRR is in a genre of its own - if there was anything really similar, we'd probably know about it.

Having said that, they do remind me of Mates of State, whose new album is really good, so I'd reccomend checking that out flyingswordfish, and anyone else who likes that sort of thing. (I know that kind of contradicts myself as it is similarly perky in places but never mind)

soundscapemn: I found your blog via Google about a week ago. I think I was searching for "Pure Reason Revolution vocal harmonies", which took me to your "2006 Band Discoveries" post. Found some great suggestions on there! Now working my way through the rest of the site.
