...the new Coldplay... I know - guilty pleasure, right? Well I downloaded it before it came out, listened to the first three tracks and decided it was good enough to purchase. I have yet to give it another listen though, haven't heard the whole thing yet... so I can't really say if it was worth it.

Right, ok, there's guilty pleasures and there's guilty pleasures, but this isn't on! Go sit in a dark room and have a long hard think about what you did! ;D

Ugh, can't stand them! They're right up there with U2, Nickelback and Hard-Fi for bands that set my teeth on edge. Know it's pretty 'trendy' to knock all of those bands but I genuinely don't like any of them. (Well, actually, I don't mind 'Pop' by U2... but apparently all their die-hard fans really don't like that record, so that makes me feel a bit less dirty! ) My main guilty pleasure (one that I'm not guilty about at all in fact, just most people would be!) is that I LOVE Jeff Wayne's "War Of The Worlds" album: it's completely camp and over the top and all the other things wrong with 70s music, and it's utterly brilliant for it. Gets put in my hi-fi at least once a month, I reckon. /

I just don't see why people dislike coldplay so much?!?
They're not massively different from radiohead really are they?
They make pretty fresh sounding music, that people enjoy.
so what if old people say they like to sound 'hip' (along with Radiohead)

I just don't see why people dislike coldplay so much?!? They're not massively different from radiohead really are they? I think they're worlds apart in terms of both style and quality of music. Aside from Chris Martin and Thom Yorke both having fairly high voices, I can't see any real similarities in their music - even stretching back to Radiohead's pre-Kid A days. Fair play if you like them (and millions of people do, so they're obviously doing something that speaks to people), but they're no more similar to Radiohead than Busted are to The Sex Pistols, IMO.

busted are VERY similar to the sex pistols! they were both pop-rock boy bands, who played no more than three chords. the only difference is busted are more family friendly, and weren't manufactured.

If you say so, can't say I'm a connoisseur of either band. My point is that Radiohead and Coldplay don't sound remotely similar to me - they obviously do to you. Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree on that one, eh?

I actually have a similar opinion to nekroman about Coldplay...I've always quite liked them and dont quite understand the stick they get to be honest. Haven't exactly fallen in love with the new album but Parachutes was beautiful music and their Glastonbury performance a few years back was very, very good! I think pre Kid-A Radiohead and Coldplay do have quite alot in common but from there on in they've gone in very different directions.
I'm not accusing you personally scat1620 for hating Coldplay because of the fashion, I'm sure some people just don't like them but it is a bit of a bandwagon. Anyway...I'm currently listening to Feeder's new effort and trying to decide what I think...not quite convinced to be honest but certainly better than the Pushing The Senses easy listening feel!

see, feeder are a band that were full of beans, and pretty rocking until the drummer died, then they went a bit easy listening, which is prefectly understandable and i'm not knocking them for it! I haven't really made up my mind about them too much, the only real opinion I have on them is that their singles aren't that great, but the albums are genrally better.

Yeah...actually, while I wasn't that fond of Pushing The Senses, Comfort In Sound, the album after the drummer died, although easy listening, was still pretty good- live, there was so much emotion in there I couldn't not like it! Glad they've got their energy back now though, will be checking them out at Reading this year I think. They used to be one of my favourite bands, along with My Vitriol, they were the first rock band I actually got into.

Anyway...I'm currently listening to Feeder's new effort and trying to decide what I think...not quite convinced to be honest but certainly better than the Pushing The Senses easy listening feel! No worries at all - there definitely ARE people who dislike Coldplay because that is the 'cool' thing to do at the moment - by the same token, there are definitely people who professed to be Coldplay fans back in 2000-ish who weren't all that into their music, but said they were because Coldplay were the next big thing back then. I did the same thing myself with Oasis back in my teens (during the Britpop years) - went round saying how much I loved Definitely Maybe mostly because everyone else seemed to be caught up in the rush: nowadays I would find it very difficult to listen to that record because I've come to be honest with myself and recognise it's not really my thing. That said, I can't see the balance of fashion ever swinging back in Coldplay's favour now - I think they'll always be an 'uncool' band in the perception of the media etc now, because they're established (and massive) and they can't by definition have that 'young, fresh, up-'n'-coming' image that helps a band to have a positive spin in the media. So I think that the bandwagon will only ever be against them in the future and that means that there'll be a number of people who spout off against them just because they feel they should... which makes life more difficult for the likes of me who genuinely dislike their music [i.e. the objectively correct people... ] to get their opinion respected and not just dismissed as bandwagon-jumping. They'll always be the critics bitches from now on, I suspect...
