I'm just getting into this group. They blew me away at first, but I became a little disaffected by their music the third or fourth time through their albums. They do seem amazing though. Any thoughts? Do they just take some getting used to?
If you take something like "Thru The Eyes Of Ruby" by SP as a criterion, which is just about perfect rock for me, it charms the kundalini snake right out from under me sometimes, it just "hits me" the right way; are there any comparisons to make in the Black Mountain catalogue?

SP?
I have gotten into them.."In the Future" is in my top 10 albums for 2008. I saw them live finally a few weeks ago. I actually dropped the PRR name a few times..met 1 dude who knew PRR actually. They kind of are not quite as simplfied as say The Sword or Wolfmother..but not as complex as PRR. But they do mix the male/female vocals well and have their epic/trippy elements. "Tyrants" off the new 1 is my favorite..also "Bright Lights" works pretty well, even if it has a repetitive element to it at 15+mins or whatever. The HEAVY RIFFS are what I dig about them most..the Zeppelin-esque parts.
Plus I think the album has gotten only better with more play.
Their previous work I haven't heard enough of..but it's more folky I guess...they did play 1 song off their s/t LP that I really liked.

The new album does get better with more play, and you're right - they're kind of like cousins of PRR; just different music in the same kind of quasi-prog family of rock.
Their first album; the self-titled Black Mountain is just about as good as the new one. But it has a slightly less cohesive feel and a strange similarity to Sonic Youth or other semi-shoe-gaze at times.
BTW: SP = Smashing Pumpkins; not a day has gone by, in, it feels like years, that I haven't at least listened to them once.

I loved In The Future and saw them in May at The Scala in London, great gig!
