Er, for no other reason than most other forums have something like this somewhere or other on them, here's a thread to discuss all things to do with the movies. Movies you love, movies you hate, movies you're off to see next week etc. Hell, we can even talk about that old children's game show The Movie Game with Phillip Schofield (was it on CBBC or CITV? - can't remember which!) if people want to... I'll kick things off with a quick summation of what I love and what I hate. Loves:Oldboy (2003) - my favourite movie ever. A Korean revenge flick about a man who is imprisoned by unknown captors for 15 years, and what he does when he is released. To say anything more about it would completely spoil it, but if you have a strong stomach for physical and mental violence in movies then I can't recommend it highly enough. Brazil (1985) - geek cliché to be a fan of this movie, but it really is a masterpiece for me. One of those movies that you can get something new from on every repeat viewing. Sin City (2005) - because it blew me away when I saw it in the cinema. Hollow as a drum, but it's still 2 hours of sheer entertainment. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) - because it was and still is the funniest movie I've ever seen. The Usual Suspects (1994) - another cliché one to add to anyone's Best Movies list, but it just does kick ass. Scream (1996) - soooooooo underrated as a film. True classic, easily the best horror movie I've ever seen. Very clever, very funny, and - unusually for most horror films - very scary. The Godfather (1972) - my favourite of the trilogy, though I also love Parts II and III as well (I'll argue to my dying day that Part III is a great film, despite it always being kicked around by the critics). The Princess Bride (1987) - just hilarious, I so wanted to be Cary Elwes when I saw this growing up as a child. Hates:Any and every romantic comedy ever made. Dross. Anything starring the 'Frat Pack': Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughan, Ben Stiller etc. ALL of their movies are just carbon copies of each other, and they're all about as funny as genocide. Fight Club - regularly have arguments with all my mates about this (they all love it). It's pretentious tosh for me, but I'll accept that I seem to be in a minority of one in this opinion so I don't kick off too much about it. Donnie Darko - see Fight Club, except everyone I know *agrees* that it's pretentious tosh, and so would anyone with any sense! Hostel, and any of its sequels in existence or in the future - giving horror movies a bad name since 2005... Right, over to you ladies and gents to put some more stuff in this thread before I return to it (and I have plenty of stuff to say). PS - oh, and my favourite round on The Movie Game was when they did the Special Effects rounds...

oddly enough Lawrie, you're the only person other than myself to actually enjoy Sin City. I loved it!
Loves:
High Fidelity - Fantastic. John Cusack is just amazing in this film.
Waynes World (1&2) - brilliant, and so right for the time it was created
Kill Bill (1&2) - just a perfect story, brilliantly told.
Blues Brothers - Witty, funny, and just glorious
Superbad - basically American Pie, but more relevant.
Hates: The Saw Films
The Matrix (all of them)
Donnie Darko
Dodgeball

Yeah, the Kill Bill films are class, would've put them in my list (along with Leon and some others) but I didn't want to make my list too long. Based on the fact that you like both SC and KB, you'd like the entrance to the kitchen in my flat: Loves:High Fidelity - Fantastic. John Cusack is just amazing in this film. Waynes World (1&2) - brilliant, and so right for the time it was created Kill Bill (1&2) - just a perfect story, brilliantly told. Blues Brothers - Witty, funny, and just glorious Superbad - basically American Pie, but more relevant. SO with you on the Wayne's World films, they are genius and just chock-full of quotes that are still funny today. And it's odd that Mike Myers went from making those films to the Austin Powers series, which are like the Wayne's World films but with all the humour, joy and obvious affection for the characters on screen sucked out. High Fidelity I'm pretty much "meh" on, mainly cos Jack Black annoys me. To be fair though, I've only seen it once and that was a long time ago. Blues Brothers are fine for me, wouldn't say I disliked them, wouldn't be classics either for me. Superbad - I haven't seen it, but I saw the trailers and they made me think I'd hate it. Would have to be convinced that it was a radically different film from what I saw in the trailers just to be persuaded to watch it. Hates:The Saw Films The Matrix (all of them) Donnie Darko Dodgeball I really like the Saw films, but I am a horror film junkie. I thought the first one was a clever, nasty little film (the type I like! ), and though the sequels have all been very derivative from the original I still enjoy them. They're popcorn movies for me though (if that's the right term - I wouldn't want to be eating anything while watching them!), they'd never make my list of classics. Love the first Matrix film (you are wrong on that one! ), and the second one had half a good action film in there (albeit mixed up with the po-faced nonsense parts), but the third one was pure turd. I very much agree with your last 2 choices of Donnie Darko and Dodgeball!

The Royal Tenenbaums: It seems to convey or uncover an ocean of emotion under a dessert of modernity. For me, this equates to a fairly emotional take on what others see as a rather dry movie. In other words it seems to convey not only my understanding of the world, but it also uncovers my inheritance of a particular, or, personal human nature.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Changes the way I see things every time I see it.
The Abyss: I don’t know why, I know I don’t watch this movie often or think about it too much – but I do love it every time I watch it. It’s like 2001: A Space Odyssey under water.
Dreams (Akira Kurosawa): Very enjoyable, going into another culture right from the start automatically puts me in the face of a sort of childlike wonder. From then the film slowly shows its true nature, a very modern take on very ancient ideas, that everything is everlasting in our cultures. Themes are recapitulated like chords in “Stairway To Heaven”.
Monty Python’s The Meaning Of Lif(e): What can I say… other than “Don’t shoot! We’re not a tiger. We’re uhhh…”
Vanilla Sky, Almost Famous, & pretty much anything Cameron Crowe has done.
Recently: Babel was good, War Inc. was good, Blood Diamond, Children Of Men, and Horton Hears A Who.

Loves:
Monthy Python and the Holy Grail: Hilariously funny movie. Far superior to the other Monty Python movies in my opinion. Brilliantly acted, with just a generally funny script.
National Lampoons Animal House: I found this movie extremely funny. 'Nuff said really. Watch it if you get the chance.
The Aviator: Watched it a long time ago, so don't remember a lot, but I do remember it hit me hard as a brilliantly acted film. Good story.
Lord of War: The only film i've liked with Nicolas Cage in. Good storyline, well acted again. Tugs at the moral heart strings.
Cloverfield: I enjoyed this movie immensely, but probably more to the situation I watched it in. I got a pirate copy of it (I don't condone pirate copies) for my Nintendo DS and watched it on this tiny screen in my room in the dark. That perfectly captured the mood of the film. Made the fact it was home videoed a lot more believable and generally set the mood better. Well acted, well edited, and despite the fact a HUGE monster was tearing up Manhattan, it seemed very realistic and believable.
Probably some more I love, but can't think of them right now!

Holy Grail is my favourite out of the three Python movies as well. The ending's a bit ropey, but other than that it is pure quality! Again, it's a popcorn movie, but it was very, very well done - especially as anything involving prominent CGI usually bores me to tears. Good choice!

Only part that disappointed me to be honest. Just kinda happened and was quite unsatisfying. But the rest of the movie is gold!

I can't believe I forgot to put Pulp Fiction on my list. That was the one that I had forgotten, hence the note at the bottom of my post. Excellent film.

I really didn't like that, felt like Tarantino-by-numbers and was a massive let down for me. I absolutely loved Planet Terror though - and the fake trailer, Machete, NEEDS to be made into a full film! Otherwise, top marks from me! ;D

I... sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on this planet who likes the Meaning Of Life more than any other of the Python films. ...and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy! I loved that one as well, has a similar sort of feel to the Python films. Due, no doubt, to the fact that Adams was a friend of "the Pythons".

I really didn't like Planet Terror all that much ... Same for Sin City ... Oh well, gore must be an acquired taste... Also loved that zombie movie that came out last year called Rec... They're making a shit american remake of it tho ... Funny fact : the final part of the trailer of the american remake is actually a huge spoiler of the final scene of the movie Or maybe they added some more content near the end of the american version ... Fuck I hate remakes. Also, kudos to old Romero movies (mainly the original Dawn Of The Dead, which the remake fails at reviving)

Donnie Darko - see Fight Club, except everyone I know *agrees* that it's pretentious tosh, and so would anyone with any sense! I LOVE THE PRINCESS BRIDE!!!! I've seen it about 438 times due to the fact that it's the only film my grandmother owns so between the ages of 5 and 15 I watched it pretty much on repeat every time I visited her. I can quote huge sections off by heart. The book is even better, by the way. I also love fight club, sorry! But I can see why you think it's pretencious...and normally I hate Brad Pitt but...it's just too cool. With Donnie Darko, however, I'm with you all the way. I CANNOT see what people see in that movie. Unlike you, I'm cursed with friends who all love it! Anyways, other films I love include Waking Life, Romeo and Juliet, The Three Amigos, Butch Cassedy and the Sundance Kid (and The Sting), Citizen Kane, Batman Begins, Sweeny Todd, anything vaguely Python related, Forest Gump, Some Like it Hot and MANY more. I recognise that some of these films are really pretty bad - I like them for a vast range of reasons, not necessarily because of quality.
