There would be no pun in "malheur" really, it's a common word, and "mal heures" doesn't make sense in french... it'd have to be more like "mauvaises heures" or "heures de malheur" "malheur" can be roughly translated to grief... If it's the correct term... "un malheur" would be like "a bad luck", a sad event. I'm native french by the way  Truth! If Jon knew a minimum of french, he wouldn't intend to make a pun with such a common word ... I still can't figure out why that song's name is in french ... The lyrics don't seem to match with "a sad event" from the demo sampler ... |

While I understand that you are a native French speaker (I'd guessed due to your Canadian location), and therefore realise that it isn't an amazingly apt or adept pun in French, for a native English speaker, it works quite well indeed.
Your points stand, that for a native French speaker who understands the nuances of his language, the pun/title doesn't work. For us Englishers [including Jon] it more than suffices.
But more to the point - what a song. Does anybody know how long it was at the Barfly?

"mal heure" still doesn't mean anything in french ... It makes no grammatical sense, and would equal to saying "evil, hour" in english or something ... Trust me, there can't be any pun in "malheur" I hate my native language, it's so complex for no reason ... |

I too would like to know how long this song is, what it sounds like, what the structure is, etc. Also, how do you pronounce Les Malheurs? I know nothing about French, but in my mind I've said "lay malYUR." Is that right?

I don't want to do him an injustice (for all I know he's fluent) but if he's been through a British education the chances are he's got only a fairly basic grasp of the language. Maybe he thought Les malheurs was some kind of obscure high-brow pun, who knows...

The "heur" in it doesn't even refer to "heure" as in "hour" And in french, we never play around with letters to make puns. I'm serious, there is absolutely no pun in "malheur". Aye, but Jons english, and we do make puns. Maybe the working title was ajokey pun and he just did a loose translation? Maybe the fact he's English meant he DID play with the French words.
Maybe you're all thinking about it too much.
