I picked up Wavering Radiant and Oceanic (Isis) in the last week. Neither has deseated Panopticon for me yet and Oceanic - whilst a good album - is my least favourite so far (I haven't got Celestial yet) because there's just a little too much screaming. It's a shame...I just don't like screaming in anything more than small doses (a small aside, my favourite scream of all time has to be the one near the end of The Grudge by Tool).
I still can't decide between Wavering Radiant and In the Absence of Truth. I haven't really had WR long enough to decide properly yet. I think it's got the right amount of heaviness, but musically I think I'm leaning towards Truth. I like the subtle Tool influences (especially some of the bass) and I like the sound of the album the most - but Panopticon still rules the roost because it's one of the best constructed albums I've heard in a very long time.
Sorry for all the rambling indecision...
I also got Escape from New York this week, the sound's really good! 65 always sound good live, even when they turn up to the gig 50 minutes before it starts with one of the worst sound engineers in the world (Zodiac in Oxford, aka O2 Academy now...every time I've been there I've been hit by a pretty horrendous wall of treble. Yucks).

You won't dig Celestial if you can't get past it. It's their heaviest album (though the EPs go beyond that). It's also stunning.
And screams the wrong word for Aaron I always thing, it's just a massive Roar!

Panopticon was my first album, and I was also rather disappointed with Oceanic at first. But I listened to it a few times with headphones while being on a train, and this album really grows. Depending on my mood, both Panopticon and Oceanic can be my favourite album. I think Wavering Radiant is more diversified, Absence Of Truth more coherent. Both are great, yet slightly behind their predecessors. Yay, can't stop listening to that album, even more so after seeing them live last Friday. What an amazing gig! 3 great bands in a row and more than 4 hours of music.

new Mars Volta album "Octahedron" comes out in June. Just heard their new song Since We've Been Wrong (yes yes, I know I'm probably about 6 months behind the times) on their website www.intotheoctahedron.com and it's absolutely brilliant stuff. Very much in the more mainstream direction I'd hoped that they'd go in for this album, and an excellent decision to aim for this kind of sound IMO. I'd actually urge everyone to give this boy a listen, even if you've been skeptical of The Mars Volta in the past. They've cut out most of the craziness in this song, and it's resulted in just a simple, lush rock ballad. Choon, if I do say so myself. Hit the link to their website (above), and then click the small yellow cross at the peak of the thin silver kite-shaped thingamejig on the far right-hand side of the picture to have a listen.
