No-one ever wants to make BA feel bad, but yeah... I'm leaving for the gig in a little under an hour ;D
I'll let ya know how it goes!

A week Saturday is my first stop... even longer to wait: boo! Stu, were you planning to buy a copy of AVO at the gig, or had you pre-ordered/planning to buy after 9th March from the internet? If you were planning to buy a copy of AVO tonight (and they're on sale), spill the beans about packaging/DVD etc soon please... ;D

So, my ears are ringing! If there was one thing about tonight it's that it seemed even more 'beefed up' than when I saw them at Cargo. It might have been my imagination, but Deus Ex Machina seemed a touch slower and had (yet more!) meat. The climax of TBAOM was like a train wreck - albeit in a good way.
And of course it wouldn't be a PRR gig without some kind of technical problem. At least they got it out the way early - Les Malheurs was aborted twice with a defective (i.e. absent) bass track. Such are the hazards of having a macbook as your 5th member I guess. They were already 10-15 minutes late, and the further delay was a proper pisser cos we didn't get an encore. Just under an hour onstage.
After the problems were out the way it was a great show. Probably not the best I've seen them play, but they looked happy and comfortable onstage and can only improve as they get into the tour - first night teething troubles were minor as far as form is concerned.
The setlist was
Les Malheurs Apogee Deus Ex Machina TBAOM Victorious Cupid Twyncyn/Trembling Willows Gloaming AVO
erm... I don't think I've missed any out. Also, it was the first time I've heard AVO and I'm instantly in love with it. Lawrie, the album was indeed on sale (I pre-ordered), and the case is pretty cool and the artwork looks better in person than I thought it would - I'll leave the rest as a surprise. I did get the Deus Ex Machina CD, the radio edit might take some getting used to because there's been stuff chopped out and it's not the Deus Ex Machina I know and love. Ah well.
I am slightly peeved at the lack on encore but it was very late when they finished. It's just that some of my old faves are in the encore *sniff*

Oh my...AVO live...AVO...LIVE! I don't think I can quite handle that excitement it might all be a bit much.... Thanks for the report, so glad someone went tonight, would have found the suspense all a bit much. Setlist still looks short but I guess as you say, the lack of an encore I'm sure didn't help.

I should also mention that it was packed and the crowd was really appreciative, but they all buggered off as soon as the main set was over. Didn't help our chances of an encore.

Really happy with that. I loved the heavy sound, especially on The Gloaming as it contrasts well with the etherealness of the album. Shame they only played two Dark Third tracks, but as Stu says there simply wasn't time.

Once they got going, I thought they were great, the newer trackes are getting better each time. I didn't even mind Les Malheurs. Bright Ambasadors has been re arraged slightly to fit in more with the current sound. Overall the main set hung together really well. They seemed to be enyoying it by the end not sure I've seen them so relaxed. Finishing with a great version of The Gloaming and straight into AVO was excellent. Shame about the encore, would have liked some more of the old suff to round off the evening. I thought the audience responce could have been better especially at the end, I couldn't believe people just left. I am sure they could have squeezed in a short encore if the audience were more determined..

I guess you were at the wrong show again Stu..I distinctly remember Nekroman saying that they weren't using backing tracks on this tour, so the Macbook can't have broken down, can it?

Not that I was there but there's a difference between using a macbook to trigger samples and a straight out backing track. But as you're such an expert, why don't you explain to us how you'd like them to make their music live onstage, using only the power of a harpsichord and a lute perhaps?

Well I don't know about the complete absence of some kind of backing track - violins in Trembling willows for example. It's definitely minimal compared to earlier tours.
And though I said 'bass track' it is samples - Jon was mashing keys to no avail.
Dav1d, are you going to any of the shows?

I never claimed a) to be an expert or b) to be anti-backing-tracks. Stu, I'm going to York with a busload of pissheads, and hope to do Bonnie Glasgae.
