So you know how they met and started up at Winchester university (at least the original members did), does anyone know what they were studying?? Just wondering, cos so much of the lyrics and imagery seem very educated and intelligent. I'd have to guess either Philosophy or Classics.

It was Westminster university in London, doing a commercial music course. I think the philosophy thing mostly comes from Jon who likes to read about it every now and again...like the name of the band comes from Emmanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, which he read writing a thesis on the construction of genius with an focus on Brian Wilson. (It's his stock interview question answer every time they get asked where the name comes from!) So yeah, guessing a lot of that kind of stuff is coming from him, don't know how much the others are involved.

well I guess I should read words beginning with W a bit more carefully in the future.
So if Jon dabbles in philosophy, where does all the classical naming/imagery come from? They're good at latin: the recognise that ex takes the ablative case (Machina) and they know how to use the genative too...(dominae). Plus they know about Greek mythology (Cupid etc) and they fill their album art with greek statues, buildings and stuff etc etc...

Haha, no thanks! I encountered Kant's 'Critique of Pure Reason' in the Havard bookshop in Boston, so I dipped in and understood none of it. Then I bought Family Guy madlibs.

To be fair...Jon's admitted in an interview that he hasn't read an awful lot of it either...

Kant may be a bit of a toughy, but I definitely like the look of that Aurelia book thing...will buy/borrow/find/steal one as soon as I can. Thanks for the recommendation.

They're good at latin: the recognise that ex takes the ablative case (Machina) and they know how to use the genative too...(dominae). . Don't think that makes them 'good' at latin. "Deus Ex Machina" is a technical term in writing, used when an unbelievable or improbable character or device is introduced to untangle the plot or resolve a situation. 'Bullits' isn't even a latin word so it matters not whether they use the genative of Dominae, which they have probably picked up through too much time in church (RVC doing services in Latin?!) or maybe from Monty Python..... "Pie Jesu Dominae..................(SMACK!)............Dona eis requiem..............(SMACK!)...." ;D

Yeah, clearly they're not fluent or anything, but the classical era is definately part of the 'image' (at least with the dark third). And thet reference it all over the place: anteus, peristyle etc etc. I just think it's interesting and an unusual choice. But very effective.

Latin?? don't be silly. RVC does services in Chav, don't you know?...and I now can't get the picture of those monks out of my head, so thanks for that Yeah, DTF...the use of "Latinesque" don't mean you're educated, more it fits in with the slightly pretentious image of prog rock, just as beards and capes did back in the dark old days (Hawkwind???). Nope, as far as I know, none of the band have been anywhere near a classical degree, never mind got one. The 'Latin' phrases and classical references were much debated on the old board - it was concluded back then that they were mainly popularist references that even I could come up with, if I could be bothered. One thing I'll say about Harkins tho...he/she is very PC...and anyway, just what IS a bloody Tonkin???

just what IS a bloody Tonkin??? The only phrase that I can come up with is 'a bloody good tonkin' and it means something completely different, I'm sure! RVC do services in Chav? wha?

I'm not here to be inciteful, my purpose here is simple - Emitte lucem et veritatem. I am certainly not here to be a kind of advocatus diaboli. Smudger is right... education has nihil ad rem - My only 'qualification' is one GCSE in home economics, and even i can bundle a few latin phrases together in order to sound intellegent... Mater tua criceta fuit, et pater tuo redoluit bacarum sambucus! (yes, monty python again! sorry smudger, another night thinking about those monks now) As for tonkin......wasn't it the name of the company who made toy diggers and trucks when i was a kid?.... or was that tonka....?! certainly wouldn't take too long to circumnavigate one of those... Me transmitte sursum, caledoni!
(edited due to poor latin grammar. now corrected!!!)

Smudger is right... education has nothing to do with the point - My only 'qualification' is one GCSE in home economics, and even i can bundle a few latin phrases together in order to sound intellegent...
