There was an amuzing little documentary on prog rock the other day on the BBC...dunno if anyone caught it? They captured the flavour nicely by making it massively overlong and calling it 'an observation in three movements.' PRR didn't feature....neither did Floyd, surprisingly. Though it did provoke a lot of debate on other forums. Interestingly there was a thread on the Floyd forum about whether Floyd were prog or not ... the jury's still out The Floyd forum thread is here

If only fans of this type of music would spend half as much time doing useful things as they do debating what is and isn't 'prog.' Someone just burn the word....honestly...

My goodness BA! Prog fans doing something useful!! Isn't that by definition impossible? The only useful thing proggers can do is go electro.

Some interesting thoughts on 'prog' at: www.thedividingline.com/prog.html... I don't agree with some of the things there as it is a very North American viewpoint; but worth a read anyway.

This is a PRR forum, and so you might well want to call it an electro/rock forum these days: we're a prog forum as much as we're a hip-hop forum... and I can't see Jon & Co deciding to whip out the bling and collaborating with Fiddy on the next album... ;D

While I can see the prog elements in The Dark Third, if you want to get into classifications, we've already established in other threads that I think there will be fairly little that will be described as 'prog' on Amor Vincit Omnia...

Wikipedia calls PRR 'new prog'. But then it calls Oceansize that as well.
I pray god there's no prog on AVO.

Although I do like Ayreon (and in particular The Human Equation) I don't think it sounds anything like PRR! It's more of a prog rock opera.
I'm not looking specifically for progressive-rock; if I wanted complex time signatures and song-structures I'd listen to Dream Theater (after I wrote that I realised it sounds like an insult, but DT are one of my favourite bands). I'm more looking for something with really good melodies, preferably rock (with guitars, bass, drums, keyboards) and vocal harmonies.

Have you tried Mew? They're quite similar in the rock with good melodies/harmonies, they are another of my favourite bands that I discovered because PRR toured with them, gutted I missed that tour.

Oooh, yeah, good shout there, they completely passed my mind when I was thinking of some decent suggestions! A bit more 'wussy' than PRR, they always remind me as a halfway home between Sigur Ros and PRR. Which is a good thing, in case anyone's dismayed by the term 'wussy'! My favourite album of theirs is And The Glass Handed Kites, and it's probably the easiest one to start with if nimos is unfamiliar with them. Though it's not like the rest of their catalogue is duff, and any of their records would be a good bet.
