I don't see the point of arguing over genres to be honest, especially when the bands are somewhat unique like PRR. To me, it's safe to say that PRR take elements of prog but a lot of different elements from several different sources and have come up with something which transcends arbitrary boundaries.
It's the same with bands like PT or Oceansize etc. PT have had several phases and it's difficult to class them as a whole. Oceansize have so many facets to their sound...contrast Music for a Nurse with Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions!
In the end, I think PRR have retained some progressive elements but it's not really the focal point of AVO.

Back on thread track again, and in the manner of that rather unfunny Jesse sketch in The Fast Show, "this week, I have mostly been listening to..." a Best Songs of 2008 playlist I've drawn up in my Winamp. So we're talking lots of This Gift by Sons And Daughters, Velocifero by Ladytron, Strength In Numbers by The Music, Accelerate by R.E.M., The Bedlam In Goliath by The Mars Volta, Third by Portishead and the odd assorted track by the likes of The Dears, The Streets, 65daysofstatic, Troubles and The Domino State.

My new albums this week... Depeche Mode - Sounds of The Universe Hum. I'm not convinced. There are some damn good tracks on here but I don't think it's DM at their best, some of it is a little tired to my ears. But I also have a feeling it may well be a grower, I'm spreading my listening quite thin this week as I went on a HMV splurge so maybe I haven't given it the attention it deserves. Empire of The Sun - Walking on The Shore Really good. For some reason I seem to be having an 80's electro throwback week but it's working for me! This reminds me of MGMT in places with a little bit of mellow Daft Punky stuff going on. But better than MGMT... Ladyhawke - Ladyhawke Yes, I know I probably shouldn't, I know it's probably REALLY bad but I'm enjoying this album. Alot. Catchy summery stuff! Oh, and I also downloaded The Boxer Rebellion's 'Union.' Again, I'm a bit undecided, it feels like one of those albums that hovers on the edge of being really good but doesn't quite make it. But I might reassess that after I see them live at the weekend.

Revisiting Grandaddy's The Sophtware Slump this morning for the first time in literally years. It's absolutely superb - "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot" and "Miner At The Dial-A-View" being the highlights - and I can't believe that this record hasn't found its way back into my thoughts a lot sooner. Nice when you rediscover a great record that you've forgotten about for ages, isn't it?

"Skip Divided" by Thom Yorke from The Eraser. On single-track repeat. Hmmm. ****ing good stuff though.

I never quite got into The Eraser, with the exception of Harrowdown Hill and I seem to have lost my copy of it...might have to go back to it at some point though, give it another go.
I'm currently listening to the new Maximo Park and feeling quite disappointed by it, as indie bands go they are one of my favourites but this new album just isn't standing out for me. Also quite enjoying Metric's new album.

I have to say, the Music for Nurses EP by Oceansize is one of my favourite 25 minutes of music ever. So many amazing moments...especially in Dead Dogs and All Sorts with Mike's voice soaring over a massive wave of sound.

Mosquito Song by QOTSA off the UK edition of Songs For The Deaf. Possibly my favourite QOTSA tune in their whole canon.

It's such a good tune that. I think I agree really.
I've been listening to them a bit recently, had lullabies on earlier.

Lullabies is my favourite of their albums, I think - consistently excellent listen from start to finish.

Teenage Witch by Eels from Souljacker. It's far too funky to be listening to at this late hour, mind.

Currently listening to the new Riverside album, which is a shade heavier than their previous stuff, but typically brilliant.
The new IQ is solid stuff. It's clear the band have settled into a comfort zone which they're not going to leave at this point, but aside from a few derivative pieces (it's pure amaze that bands are still paying homage to the near 40 year old Suppers Ready), there's some really nice pieces of music in the new one, particularly track two, which encapsulates the reasons why I still follow the band in a few short minutes.
The new Dream Theater is about as cookie cutter Dream Theater as you can get. Honestly, you could take any track from the new album and drop it into any of their previous 4 albums and you'd never tell it was out of place. It's painfully clear they have absolutely zero interest in doing anything new, or even pushing themselves in the slightest (same ten year old keyboard riffs and samples from Rudess FFS), which is quite galling for one of the leading progressive metal bands. Don't get me wrong, it's not terrible, the last track is good stuff, but the band just sound tired and directionless at this point.
Gapacho's Tick Tock is amazing from start to finish though. Subtle, beautiful, powerful and driven. A wonderful album, and second only to AVO for my album of the year, check out the first part of The Walk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7V7GnkIuxY&feature=related).
