Controversial? Not in the least! I'd say that was pretty self-evident. Not to dis the mighty Floyd, who were brilliant in their way, but TDT is clearly in a different league, as I expect AVO will be too. In fact the bits of PRR that sound most like Floyd are generally the bits that I like least (but not always).
For me, all music has to be taken in context before you can judge how well written it is. Floyd and PRR are both great (as are loads of other bands) for being ground-breakers. Poor old Floyd just seems boring to me now because they've been ripped off so much, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily bad music. It's just my attention span is inversly proportional to the newness/originality of the music (which is also the reason why all PRR's new tracks sound so much better to me, even though they're not technically).

The objective, indisputable facts that you all seem to be getting wrong are- Stop right there. They're not objective and indisputable because OoS is not Muse's best album ;D To illustrate I believe that Jon is a fan of Pink Floyd but I would go so far to say (and I know this is going to be controversial) that The Dark Third is a better album than ANY by PF (and I was a big fan of The Wall/Wish You Were Here but NEVER a fan of Dark Side of the Moon) Given that "bright ambassadors of morning" was taken from a line in a Floyd song (their best, imo: Echoes), they probably are fans, yes ;D To suggest The Dark Third is a better album than any done by PF is a little silly, imo. The Dark Third is a magnificent album but isn't in the same league as Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, or even Meddle. Those albums pretty much immortalised Floyd. I personally think no band has actually managed to top those albums since. The only one that I'd even consider coming remotely close is Radiohead's OK Computer.

I don't quite understand that post....do you mean that TDT is not even a little tiny bit in a different league? Or what?

Hi I'm Stu and I'm dragging this thread back towards on topic. I did introduce myself on page 1 but that's a long while back, I'm a whole new man now! About me: I'm Stu, I'm 22 and I live in a hovel in Reading, because I'm a final year meteorology student. I currently have a sore throat. This is me pissing away my student loan in Hawaii: Sexy, right? I also went to the grand canyon If you spot me at a gig, come and say hi. Free drinks accepted and dispensed with abandon ;D

Come on, Floyd were basic in comparison! The songs are really well written, yeah, and astonishing for the time, but they're never gonna be as well produced as PRR, plus a lot of their stuff suffers from being typically over the top prog with ridiculous solos and pretencious "effects".
Oh yes, and all attempts to keep this thread on topic are FUTILE!!

The production on Dark Side DESTROYS not just PRR, but just about everything ever. I'm not even like a massive Pink Floyd fan-boy (I say, with the box set of mini-LP reissues next to me), I just think they are really fucking good. I also disagree with the other points, but I can see no good coming of this.

Bah humbug, I'll fight a bitter Muse crusade by myself then! The objective, indisputable facts that you all seem to be getting wrong are: 1) OoS is their best album, and not just up to Citizen Erased: the second half of the album is equally as good as the first (in fact, my least favourite track is Hyper Music, which is a first-half boy) - Screenager, Microcuts, Darkshines and Megalomania are all absolute class, with only Feeling Good letting the side down a tad. 2) Showbiz probably is their worst album, but that's a relative term and it's still no less than 'good' on an absolute scale. Yep, there are one or two duds on the album (I'm looking at you in particular, Falling Down!), but these are outweighed by a number of decent songs and a couple of gems thrown into the mix. The actual song Showbiz remains my favourite individual Muse song released to date, and would certainly make my Top 10 songs by any band. So yeah, the moral of the story is I'm right, you're wrong: na na na naaah na! Snap, Showbiz is also my favourite Muse song. Citizen is in a close second and Stockholm in third for me. But they're still going to have to do something damn good to reclaim my heart...BHAR still pains me. Even their live show isn't quite what it used to be - I just felt like they had tempered things a bit on the BHAR tour whilst before they were just mental.

Strange how opinions differ (thank God). I like Floyd but never saw the fuss about Dark Side of the Moon. I just don't like it, and as for Radiohead....don't get me started.

Right, been meaning to do this but don't have much to say about myself but here goes.. - I'm Jemi (go figure...). It's obviously not my real name but nobody calls me it and it's easy enough to figure out. - I'm 19, and I live in Norwich. - I go to the Norwich University College of Arts (NUCA), formally and probably best known as the Norwich School of Art & Design. BA Hons Photography is the name, and taking pictures of stuff whilst dabbling in Publishing and Graphics Design is the game. - The pipeline dream is to not drop out and become a promotional photographer. I can't stand none of this taking up-close shots of flowers lark.. - I got into PRR, April of this year, when somebody sent me In Aurélia, which I listened to on repeat furiously until I bought myself CTftB & TDT, which now I also listen to repeat furiously. More accurately Golden Clothes because as my title thingy to the left says, I bum it a bit too much. - PRR are a bit of a wild card for me as beforehand I never listened to bands like this, I'm testing the waters though by trying out various bands such as Porcupine Tree etc. so I can't participate on discussions about PF like some of you can. - If anybodys buying me a drink, make it a Pimms & Lemonade- ice & fruit, no mint. I can't actually think of anything interesting to say. So if you're dying to know something, just ask...

Mint is the most important bit of Pimm's (and thus, another multi-page argument begins) Don't care. My drink is single malt scotch whisky. Buy me one and we'll be friends for life* *if you don't add ice, soda water or any other adulterant.

Pimms is rubbish I've got an amazing bottle of Port that needs finishing though. It's a white Port and it's stunning.
