I'm almost certain they intend to go a little more down the electronic road on the next album...it was a good while ago but I vaguely remember Jon saying something about it plus, the electro scene is something they are all very much into at the minute, so it shouldn't come as a suprise if that is reflected in their new album. If they continue like Deus Ex Machina though, I think this could be a very good thing! I think they're possibly distancing themselves from the whole 'prog' thing a little...I know they were never keen on that label in the first place! That sounds about right to me. When I saw them at the Hertford Marquee back in the spring of this year, I had a quick chat with Jon after the gig, and was telling him how much I enjoyed the 'electronic' part of Golden Clothes (it was the first time I'd ever heard it, and I had to ask him what it was). When I mentioned that he said that they'd been trying to put together a

It's amazing how much people can write in response to my comments....but anyways I agree with most of what's been said here except the bit about the lyrics just being another instrument. Although of course Jon Chloe and Jamie do sound fecking great when they sing I do actually get a real sense of...something...when I listen to them as words and poetry. The whole vibe of the music is brilliantly reflected in them, and even if they don't make sense they still are more than just any old words. The imagery is beautiful. Especially now I've listened to it so often I can actually make out what they're saying most of the time. Btw, in response to the very first comment in this thread, I swear the line ends in 'in love' rather than 'they roamed'. Hard to tell though.

I agree with most people on here...the lyrics are pretty incomprehensible, meaningless and pretentious. In fact, everything I expect from a 'prog' band in an album about sleep, waking consciousness etc. I only say 'prog' as that was their direction at the time of making the album (2005?). BUT, don't people think that, with a change of style (electro, house or whatever) that the sensibility of the lyrics must change? I'm not sure that 'Ave verum' 'bold anteus' and 'deus ex machina' would attain a great amount of credibility in a context OTHER than 'TDT'. Just my 2p worth. I think they ought to try writing 'sensible' (even Bowie-esque) lyrics because I'm sure they'd be pretty good at it and it would only add to the overall appeal. Most people I play the songs to, their immediate response is, 'Sounds great but the lyrics are difficult to hear and comprehend. Except for TDF who thought they were 'awesome' ;D

Well, for what it's worth, I find quite a few chunks of Deus make a lot more coherent sense...Deus Ex Machina being God working like a machine, the lyrics suggest annoyance that some sort of relationship hadn't quite happened, or failed... ('she didn't wanna know, she'll f**king never know' 'did you feel love, did you ever burn, ever learn?' 'now take your woes to the ocean' 'you'll always be my love') and I get the feeling that it all links up and actually makes sense for the most part...cos God works like a Deus Ex Machina so things don't always make sense in love, or things will work out in the end...? I'm not quite sure exactly yet....
II've just woken up so not sure how much sense that made but I guess I'm trying to say I can see sense in there certainly...While I wouldn't want their actual style or colourful imagery to change, if they can put in a general feeling of sense like that I think that would be good! Then again, I still uphold that they've done that before...prime example 'The Exact Colour'- strange imagery but clearly a sort of love song nonetheless!!

Except for TDF who thought they were 'awesome' ;D Hehe, yeah well actually when I first heard them I couldn't understand them at all. I still mostly can't. It's the snatches of lyrics that I do know that are beautiful. And agreed that a change of style will bring a change of lyrics. Their whole space/dreams/ancient greeks thing is disappearing already (see the artwork for Victorious Cupid). So all we have to do now is guess the new theme.
