Fair enough. As a matter of interest it's worth discussing but I still feel we should keep in the back of our minds what's most important about PRR...namely their awesomeness.

I don't think there's any right or wrong to this issue. To get worked up over marketing methods is to miss the point. I personally am far more concerned that their soon to be released material is still of as good if not better quality as the stuff we all know and love...how they get it to us matters not.

Anyone else get the impression they're just kiilling time at the mo? Their latest bulletin (for all non myspace users) simply stated that they had some videos on youtube, as if we didn't know...maybe regular bulletins aren't as great as we thought they might be...

I think it's less of a 'the news is there is no news', and more of a 'the news is news is coming'. But agreed it's not as spectacular as it could of been. We just have to keep waiting I guess and hope for the best.

I'm praying 'a single' doesn't mean victorious cupid (not that that's a bad song...). Exciting stuff though! The dawn of a new era...

Yeah, clearly they're not fluent or anything, but the classical era is definately part of the 'image' (at least with the dark third). And thet reference it all over the place: anteus, peristyle etc etc. I just think it's interesting and an unusual choice. But very effective.

Kant may be a bit of a toughy, but I definitely like the look of that Aurelia book thing...will buy/borrow/find/steal one as soon as I can. Thanks for the recommendation.

well I guess I should read words beginning with W a bit more carefully in the future.
So if Jon dabbles in philosophy, where does all the classical naming/imagery come from? They're good at latin: the recognise that ex takes the ablative case (Machina) and they know how to use the genative too...(dominae). Plus they know about Greek mythology (Cupid etc) and they fill their album art with greek statues, buildings and stuff etc etc...

So you know how they met and started up at Winchester university (at least the original members did), does anyone know what they were studying?? Just wondering, cos so much of the lyrics and imagery seem very educated and intelligent. I'd have to guess either Philosophy or Classics.

He could still help with PRR tours next year though...as smudger was hypothesising.

Most people I play the songs to, their immediate response is, 'Sounds great but the lyrics are difficult to hear and comprehend. Except for TDF who thought they were 'awesome' ;D Hehe, yeah well actually when I first heard them I couldn't understand them at all. I still mostly can't. It's the snatches of lyrics that I do know that are beautiful. And agreed that a change of style will bring a change of lyrics. Their whole space/dreams/ancient greeks thing is disappearing already (see the artwork for Victorious Cupid). So all we have to do now is guess the new theme.

It's amazing how much people can write in response to my comments....but anyways I agree with most of what's been said here except the bit about the lyrics just being another instrument. Although of course Jon Chloe and Jamie do sound fecking great when they sing I do actually get a real sense of...something...when I listen to them as words and poetry. The whole vibe of the music is brilliantly reflected in them, and even if they don't make sense they still are more than just any old words. The imagery is beautiful. Especially now I've listened to it so often I can actually make out what they're saying most of the time. Btw, in response to the very first comment in this thread, I swear the line ends in 'in love' rather than 'they roamed'. Hard to tell though.

Several things to point out on this discussion:
a) although Victorious Cupid does sound very similar to TDT in general, if you listen closely there are plenty of new (and awesome) riffs, and the a capella bit at the beginning is awesome.
b) I think the indecipherability (is that a word?) of PRR's writing is part of their charm. It's so refreshing having a band that doesn't try and force its crazed political views (even if I agree with most of them) down your throat, but instead lets you take what you want from the overall impression. And the real beauty is that every now and again you do catch a phrase, and it has so much more meaning for its rarity. The little snippets of imagery you can glean are so suggestive and beautiful, it inspires me far more than if they'd told me something plainly that I can't question or adapt to my own feelings. The quality of true creative beauty comes as much from the listener/reader etc as it does from the composer/author etc. That's why PPR are creative geniuses - they acknowledge this. If you want music to change the world, of course, then its no good, but if you just want something beautiful, then its perfect.
c) I agree change is needed, though I would call more for 'development' rather out and out sudden change. If you listen to Radiohead's early stuff (as a random example) it sounds nothing like Kid A etc... Bands develop, and I'm sure PRR is no exception. I can't wait to see what progress the next album brings. Some of the new tracks they played at Southampton the other night were sounding way more metal-ish than they've previously been. I'm so excited!
