I think one of the biggest problems in this discussion is that without going off on a major rant, what is 'mainstream?' Because these days, its not simply the charts, there are a multitude of 'mainstreams,' it's a really wide term that doesn't actually really mean much. Completely true. I BLAME THE INTERNET! With such a varied mix of music nowadays and so easy to find and discover that there just isn't a person out there who likes a particular 'type' of music Without the internet, who here would even know about PRR? Don't be dragging NIN into this. I'm actually quite a big fan of NIN ... The whole "I wanna fuck you like an animal" success in the 90's makes me sick tho, but that's only an opinion

Without the internet, who here would even know about PRR? *Raises hand...* An ex read a review in the Times and bought the EP, and brought it over to my house one day (arguably, I may, at the time, have told him it was a load of twaddle, but opinions change!) I think I've said that before on here somewhere but yes, internet had nowt to do with it!

I don't think they'll make the mainstream because their music is too 'long' and 'confusing' for the average person to enjoy. I say good.... I find that the term mainstream often is used (more or less) when someone really wanna say stupid, shallow or something else degrading. Mainstream is ok. To me that is the type of music most people listens to. I listen to bands like PRR, Opeth, Porcupine Tree but also some mainstream stuff like Robbie Williams (my biggest sin, I'm so ashamed ). I doubt most people like swearwords in songs. Maybe when they're in a certain age and feel the need to be hip. Just as BA said, swearwords are a way to put a certain emphasis to whatever, to show strong emotions, if you like. There is nothing wrong with people that don't enjoy long songs. I think it sounds like certain someones here puts themselves in a superior position. Just like I do On the other hand, I might be too old to participate in this discussion anyway And yes Lawrie, NIMOS!

Without the internet, who here would even know about PRR? I would. Found them when they toured with Porcupine Tree last summer. We did actually find new music even before internet - if you can believe it There are things (still!) like magazines, Radio, TV and record stores.

Without the internet, who here would even know about PRR? Snap with BA on this one. I discovered PRR completely randomly after I saw them support the lamentably-missed Hope Of The States at the London Astoria in 2004. Most impressive support band I'd ever seen, so I set about checking them out. And I'd got into Hope Of The States on the back of a review by an excellent critic called John Earls who writes for UK Teletext, so my discovery of PRR was completely internet-free, both directly and indirectly!

I fonud them via Classic Rock magazine.. Actually, I did the same ... Just supposed most people would've found out about them through, let's say Last.fm, since they're pretty high in Porcupine Tree's similar artists ... Also, I never disagreed with swear words being used to express emotions, just stating that it used to generate alot of radio success back in the 90's... And people should learn to appreciate music without actually caring about how long it lasts. Restricting your tastes to the song's lenght is even worse than genres ... My definition of mainstream is : Any artist who thinks about money before writing the actual music. Commercial success before creativity. Also, scratch radio and TV, the most creative material those 2 play is ... Foo Fighters... Pardon my weird english ...

Without the internet, who here would even know about PRR? Me too. Saw them as Oceansize support. Don't be dragging NIN into this. I'm actually quite a big fan of NIN ... The whole "I wanna fuck you like an animal" success in the 90's makes me sick tho, but that's only an opinion why?

I'm actually quite a big fan of NIN ... The whole "I wanna fuck you like an animal" success in the 90's makes me sick tho, but that's only an opinion why? The huge commercial success they (well, he ...) got just because of that line in Closer was ridiculous.

it's hardly his fault though. it's not why the lines there, it makes sense in the context of the song, and the greater context of the record.

The huge commercial success they (well, he ...) got just because of that line in Closer was ridiculous. hang on...hang on... so you're saying they got successful in the 90s because of that one line? in that one song? well champ, in the 90s a lady called Tipper Gore set up the PRMC which basically means swearing on records was a bit frowned upon, and MTV/Radio/'mainstream' outlets wouldn't play it. thus meaning they did not become 'commercially' successful in the 90's due to saying 'fuck'. Industrial bands like Ministry were pretty big at the time and maybe it was just something similar to what was proving a popular genre? maybe? possibly? absolutely? done.

lol. I discovered them cos my bf had a picture of Chloe on our fridge! went 2 see wot the fuss was about in poland and totally loved there music from the start. My bf doesnt like her new hair so we r safe there now too lol. I think chloe as a pretty girl will bring PRR 2 the mainstream. It is all it takes imo. and the new tunes (from my space, didnt make Barfly ) are def more mainstream. I dont think anyone can argue. It is nice to follow a band wiv a smaller fanbase, as u feel more important, so mayb that is why sum of us dont like the whole mainstream idea. But maybe that is why we get in to small bands? so we can tell our mates that we were there from the start? As 4 swearing, the same exact word. a song by Radiohead which made them BIG comes 2 mind and it was also there to make more expression, not 2 be mainstream imo. ;D ;D Still waiting 4 barfly pics and bootlegs...
