Found a thread like this on the DiS forums and thought it could be adapted quite interestingly, since lately I know we've been discussing what we consider to be the 'essential' PRR in a couple of threads. I count that they have...25 tracks and 4 that I would put under the category of Sunset Sound, though I know thats a bit of a blurry line sometimes...
So, if you were going to make an "introduction to" CD of PRR what would you put on it?
The CD must be no more than 8 tracks long.
Bit like the ideal set list thread I know, but kind of different premise, as in, which tracks would you use to 'sum up' PRR? ;D

I will post mine shortly...I'm dead stuck at 9 and pained to cut any of them out...I originally said 10 tracks but thought that was a little generous!
OK...In Aurelia got brutally chopped at the last minute but another day I think I'd have chosen something else to go...
1) Deus Ex Machina 2) The Twyncyn/Trembling Willows 3) Nimos & Tambos 4) Victorious Cupid 5) Apogee/Requiem For The Lovers 6) The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning 7) The Intention Craft 8) AVO

Interesting stuff: nice one! Hmmm, I'd make two slightly different CDs depending on whether the brief is to 1) make the most representative 8-song collection of PRR's music, or to 2) make a CD that would be most likely to get your average music fan who's never heard of PRR interested in their music. CD #2 is easier to draw up than CD #1 for me, so I'll have a bash at that first and then come back to the most representative sample of PRR's music if BA tells me that's what she meant when starting this thread! Okay, the 8 songs I'd pick to try and get someone interested in PRR would be: 1) Les Malheurs 2) In Aurelia (IDC Remix) 3) The Intention Craft 4) Apprentice Of The Universe 5) Nimos & Tambos 6) Bloodless 7) Bullitts Dominae 8) AVO I'd actually probably have The Clearing and the early instrumental version of Borgens Vor in there if we were counting them as early PRR tracks rather than The Sunset Sound numbers cos I think they're both big potential crowd pleasers. Seems a bit of a cheat though, so the above is what I'd choose.

For an introduction I would choose something that shows all the shades/faces of their music: 1. Ambassadors - to show that epic, prog face with bombastic riffs 2. Apprentice of the Universe 3. Goshens Remains - both to show that more "dreamy" and gentle shade 4. In Aurelia 5. Arrival/The Intention Craft - both as a sample of the guitar, "grungy" shade (besides, I bloody love Arrival so I just have to put it here ) 6. Les Malheurs - disco face of course 7. Deus Ex Machina - to show that they still haven't forgotten about guitars and how well they are mixed with electronic sounds. 8. AVO - the gentle, dreamy, electronic face. Well, I think that this list, more or less, sums up their music.

The "reccommending CD", I suppose, is partly an exercise in tracking back and remembering how one got into PRR in the first place. Therefore, Ambassadors has to be there; as little as I can believe it now when compared to their other delights, Ambassadors was, to me then, a weird, noodly track that suddenly turned into an amazing shitstorm of wonder. Not a great opener though! I had a massive crisis over HTTSTM! but have decided that any such CD would HAVE (IMO!) to end with AVO.
1. Victorious Cupid [ORG single version] - Probably the most enticing opening of any PRR song. 2. In Aurelia 3. TBAOM 4. Nimos & Tambos 5. Les Malheurs 6. Deus Ex Machina 7. Bullitts Dominae 8. AVO - The Ulti-closer
I'm pleased that this contains half new / half old...

I agree with Lawrie that the brief is not clear enough. For a playlist to convert new fans, I would choose: (though even this depends on the type of person I'm trying to convert)
Ambassadors The Exact Colour Nimos Willows Bullitts Deus Malheurs The Intention Craft
For a playlist to sum up PRR, I would choose:
Deus Victorious Cupid Les Malheurs Apogee Golden Clothes Ambassadors Bullitts Intention Craft
It's friggin painful, cutting so many good tracks.

I'd agree with most of your second playlist but I'd drop one of Deus/Victorious Cupid to drop in one of Aeropause, Goshens or Exact Colour. DEM and VC are fairly similar sounding and I think those three tracks really show a different side to PRR that isn't represented so well in that otherwise great list.

An 8 song summary, or an 8 song best of? Hmm...
Summary:
1) Goshens Remains 2) The Bright Ambassadors of Morning 3) The Twyncyn/Trembling Willows 4) The Intention Craft (acoustic) 5) Golden Clothes 6) Deus Ex Machina 7) The Gloaming 8) AVO
Best of:
1) In Aurélia 2) The Exact Colour 3) The Twyncyn/Trembling Willows 4) Voices in Winter/In the Realms of the Divine 5) Victorious Cupid (album version) 6) Deus Ex Machina 7) The Gloaming (but this only makes it with Jamie's megasolo on the end - why oh why this wasn't on the album is way beyond me) 8) AVO
I'd say my summary pretty much has every aspect of PRR I can think of, with the exception of anything much like "Eiderdown" or "Sound of Free" - but honestly I can cope without those ones.

I'd actually probably have The Clearing and the early instrumental version of Borgens Vor in there if we were counting them as early PRR tracks rather than The Sunset Sound numbers cos I think they're both big potential crowd pleasers. Swaying a bit OT, but is there any chance of ever getting to hear any of that stuff. I've done a Google search, but only get the usual Last FM or Wiki links. Searching Amazon, I'm assuming it was nothing to do with Ibiza. ;D How comparable is it to PRR would you say?

It's a poppier/more Beach Boys PRR.

Cheers. Was any of their stuff ever officially released, or was it all just demos and bootlegs?

There were two singles and a track or two on compilations. See here: prr.baldyslaphead.co.uk/Sunset.htmI've got the the singles, good tunes. Some of the demos come between the two bands, I don't think we are sure which they REALLY belong to.
