Not really! Very much an album band. Listening to a handful of tracks isn't enough to form a proper opinion of a band, you need to dedicate some time to actually listening to and absorbing the music. [/rant] On my pod now, will dedicate some time to listening to them tomorrow. But now it's time to finally see the DVD in full length!

Yup, you need ages for a coopers album. Definitely worth reserving judgement til you've had a good ten full listens or so.

totally. s'like Kid A, I hated that album for ages. Same with Coopers, I totally wasn't fussed but I'd bought it and was gunna persist a bit! Dunno what old me was playing at sometimes frankly.

You are in for a treat. Haven't really listened to it for ages but it was one of my favourite albums 3 years ago. A stunner. Cool, really looking forward to it Totally different from what I had expected, but definitely good (and that's only after listening to half of the album). I can spot traces of Talk Talk and Floyd in there. Love the synths. The vocals range from boring to brilliant, though.

With an album like that, something would have to hook me... Something catchy, or something that makes them seem like a talented band, but I couldn't listen to something I felt was bland more than twice...

Yes, I totally agree. This is exactly what I thought this morning. Especially with so many people disliking TCTC.

So, what exactly is their relevance? They were Tom Bellamy's old band, and he helped produced H&A and he did a remix of Deus?

He helped produce/write H&A. And Coopers were/are a fair influence on PRR.

To move the conversation on, what's everyone's favourite specific H&A moments? And you're not allowed to say "cruel is the sound" from Bllitzkrieg - it's too obvious.
Mine are: 1. The second verse in Fight Fire, where the guitars leave off for a bit revealing some cool electro bleepiness behind the vocals. 2. "That's what I'm feeling" breakdown in Black Mourning - also obvious but had to be said. 3. The first 45 seconds of LMLR - sounds like the Battle of the Somme turned into music 4. The drop at the end of the quiet chorus three quarters of the way through Valour - so powerful! 5. All of Blitzkrieg and Open Insurrection (now I'm just cheating, sorry!)
I'll add more as I think of them.

Just checked the booklet - it's "I'll rest while I'm feeling (tired)" in BM - who knew?

I'd say Coopers should be a big influence of any progressive-looking British band of the last 5-10 years. Especially bands fusing rock and electronic music, like PRR.

Oh - looks like my plan to change the subject's been foiled.

And to get back on topic myself(!), I'd say 3.39 of Armistice, when the guitar comes in through the mantra of "deliverance", and for a minute after. I think it's a slightly bloated song but that is such a cathartic and epic point in the album. Also, 1.56 in LMLR when the "I believe you..." thing punches in after the creepy keyboard stuff. Finally, 1.51 in Black Mourning when there's a really heavy guitar cutting through in the mix of the 2nd verse, which is a really nice way of keeping it interesting and different from verse 1.
