Can't argue with not calling Jon/Chloe/Jamie/Paul geniuses yet (how many geniuses in music are there? - not many), but who knows what work they'll do in the future? Matt Bellamy most definitely wasn't a genius at the time that Showbiz was released (albeit Muse were certainly very promising then), but I'd argue that from Origin Of Symmetry onwards Matt Bellamy is a legitimate shout for the label 'genius'. PRR might make an album of genius in the nearer or further future or they might not. The Dark Third certainly bodes well for the future, it's just a matter of chance as to whether they ever make that quantum leap from good/great to perfection/genius. Who knows?
I wouldn't say that Jon is a plagiarist though, that is far too harsh. Jon is no more of a plagiarist from Pink Floyd and The Beach Boys than, say, Thom Yorke was from The Pixies (early on) and WARP's entire back catalogue (more recently). Ditto with Matt Bellamy from Jeff Buckley/Nirvana/Queen. Even nicking the line The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning for their flagship song is no worse than Radiohead being named after a Talking Heads song. Influences don't always equal plagiarism, and I'd say PRR put enough of their own stamp on their music to be free from being called plagiarists.

Is it some sort of very exclusive limited edition of the album or summat? You must already own at least one standard copy, if only cos the band has released it so many times!

Forget Gaudete, I'm still waiting for someone to tell me who is or what's the meaning of the following words: "Bullitts", "Goshen" and "Borgens Vor"...

Looks like you just did! I have no idea how it should be pronounced, my entire knowledge of the song comes from the first series of I'm Alan Partridge...

Good stuff, any news is good news. Fair play to all of that. I know Guadete and the acapella Intention Craft are oldies, but I don't have permanent mp3s of those boys, so it's good to hear them again. And a new TBAOM will be nice, wonder if it will condense all the singing parts of the song down into a nice radio-friendly pop song, or whether it will expand into previously unseen improvs and jam sessions which result in a brand new 30 minute epic...? DVD is not dead in the water yet, it seems: I'll have some of that! If any band members stop by to read this thread: please, PLEASE release a DVD - it would be as good, nay, better than Spurs signing a decent defender! Hints of new material is always good news as well. In fact, the whole bulletin has just left me in very good spirits: here's hoping that PRR really get back on track in 2008 - I genuinely think they (and The Music) are one of the bands with the most unfulfilled potential I have ever seen, and if they can make strides towards being the band we know they can be, then we're all in for a fantastic ride! Woo, and indeed, hoo! PS - Also, is it just me, or [beautiful as it is] does everyone's mind automatically think of Alan Partridge saying "Listen to this, Jill, it'll blow your socks off!" when they hear the PRR acapella Guadete?

Nice one, Paul, and kudos for taking the time to post on here as well as the upcoming Myspace bulletins. Good to know everyone on Team PRR is raring to go again, and really looking forward to whatever the new year brings for the band. Best of luck with the new stuff! PS - oh, and there is nothing wrong with '3 minute pop tunes': there's a little one called Nimos & Tambos that I think is pretty sweet... ;D

While I totally agree more updates would be nice, I still stand by the fact that it is really not uncommon for a band to go very quiet while they work on an album. I also do think there's a strong possibility that right now, they've not got a lot more to tell us than what they already have- they are recording, planning tours for next year and until that changes and they've confirmed release or tour dates, I can see why they wouldn' necessarily feel a need to constantly update people. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to know what they are up to but I can also see that if nothing's changed, why would they keep sending us bulletins saying 'we're recording, not sure when we'll be finished yet' 'we're recording, not sure when we'll be done' 'we're recording, it's going ok but still not got a predicted release date.' Anyway, I swear someone started to complain that Jamie was 'killing time' when he linked to the youtube videos. All I'm saying is if they've got nothing to tell, it's as simple as that. I take your point, BA, and it is a fair one. All I'd say that is with a band with PRR's recent history of near-crisis after near-crisis, a word here and there just makes a world of difference. Another of my favourite bands, The Music, have been notoriously bad at this in the past, but they have recently gone back into the studio, and are posting regular small snippets of information: Rob will just drop a quick one-sentence bulletin on Myspace every few days saying what they've been working on (e.g. getting the drums down on a new song etc). It shouldn't take any effort to do that for a band, and in the case of bands who look like they might fall off the face of the Earth and split up at any second (like PRR and The Music), it makes the fans feel that there will be something worth sticking around for, no matter how long it takes.

Oh, Harkins IS a man of many talents, but it does sound as though he is a little disaffected by what's going on,as, I must admit, I am. When you have followed and supported a band as much as I have over the last 3-4 years it does take quite a lot to feel this way. So, to answer the question, it is obvious that none of the band does read this forum as there is no real defence being put up for the band's lack of communication. All the other boards I post on have input from the bands in question, why can't PRR? Maybe the problem is the lack of their own Board (since the loss of the sony one) and the amount of control they have over it. Maybe this board's administrator should get in touch with the band and suggest they put a link to this forum in their reply to every new friend on Myspace. Harkins is right...56 members for a 4-year old band isn't very much to show for it. Let's get this 'buzz' going.... I don't think that the band have a duty, in any sense, to keep in contact with their fans via a board like this, but that certainly doesn't excuse the sporadic (at best) bulletins on Myspace, which is now their seemingly official homepage. Whilst it is probably a very sensible idea for the band to have an idea of the general mood of the fanbase by reading forums like this, I wouldn't expect them to actually post on here, and then get dragged down into debates with us fans, and potentially end up being 'called out' - something I think that wouldn't be fair. However, while I don't expect the band to post on here (though reading this forum would certainly do them no harm), there are no excuses for keeping in regular (one-way) contact with the fanbase via official channels (i.e. Myspace). PRR are one if the worst bands in this regard on the list of bands I like, and it's even more frustrating/confusing when you think about how small and fragile their particular core fanbase is. You'd think that with such a low number of diehard fans, they'd be desperate to try and keep the few fans they have informed of what is going on, before they drift away in a vacuum of information.

The DVD bit may or may not be due to these forums: when I posted that thread I also sent an e-mail to the Paul's address (as listed on his site) to ask how likely that DVD might be, and to pass on some words of encouragement that a DVD release would be very welcome. But yes, between that and the forums, that must be why that has disappeared from his site.
I found these forums from the Facebook group The Pure Reason Revolution Revolution. I hardly ever check the Yahoo group, but I think these boards are linked there too.

What do people think? I often see guests lurking on here when I check out the boards, and (let's face it) there can't be all that many casual music fans stopping by on their trawl through the worldwide web! I'd have thought that most people who would describe themself as a PRR fan would have registered for the forums, so maybe it's the band members having a sneaky peak at how the faithful are feeling? I think the band (or people connected to them) must have read the topics on the old Sony forums, because that bulletin back at the start of the year on their Myspace acknowledged a lot of the fan frustrations that were being expressed on the old boards. If the band know about these forums, probably reasonable to assume that they look in every now and then to guage the mood? Dear admin, have you got anything to say on the subject? ;D Or maybe Jon/Chloe/Jamie/Paul, you'd like to take a bow and say hello? Maybe I shouldn't do my conspiracy theories late at night when I should be sleeping.............

Bit of an obvious thread, and it does what says on the tin, but what are everyone's favourite parts of PRR's songs? There are loads to choose from, but my personal highlights would be (in no order of preference):
- The part in Goshen's Remains from Jon singing "Morning's dew rose over the planet" to the end of the vocals on that song. - The opening vocals on The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning, from "It takes a minute to photograph" up until Jon begins the "A million bright ambassadors of morning" part. - When the guitars kick in and Arrival goes 'loud'. - The "Please carry away this severed head" psuedo-choruses on The Twyncyn/Trembling Willows. - The electronic-y (rubbish word!) part at the end of Golden Clothes. - Cheating, but just about the whole of He Tried To Show Them Magic!/Ambassadors Return! ;D
What parts do everybody else most enjoy to PRR's songs?

I love Golden Clothes. I agree with your comment that it became a bit 'lost' by only being released on the eventual European release of TDT, but the band only really have themselves to blame on that score: it could've been included on the original UK release of The Dark Third, I think (remember Jon mentioning it on their site/myspace prior to TDT). If not the band could've sold it as a standalone single on iTunes or summat, or held it back for the new album. Whichever way you look at it, it got sold short as a track. But yes, it is the mutt's nuts in my view.

right - at the end of the day, the band are busy trying to record an album. stop being total children asking for updates and stuff, if there's anything to tell, they'll tell you! as for the whole 'legal reasons' stuff - that's the business of the band, and the band only. they are not your property, just let them get on with their job. and as 'fans' do your job by listening to their music (as and when it gets released) and going to their shows. sorry for the rant, i'm just getting quite annoyed with the attitudes of people on here! Have got no problems with letting the band keep their 'legal reasons' stuff to themselves - that's not really anyone's business, and as fans we don't have a divine right to know the inner workings/dynamics/politics of the band. Couldn't disagree more with your first sentence though: I firmly believe that for a band of PRR's size and media profile (i.e. as good as unknown to 99.99% of the population and the media), it IS the band's job to keep fans in the loop with news on forthcoming recordings, releases and shows. If they were a band like, say, Hard-Fi (god forbid!) then fine: I will hear about the progress of their new works whether I like to or not as the mainstream media will push it at every possible opportunity. Unfortunately, the way of the world at the moment is the only way I'm going to find out if PRR have a new album out/are playing live shows I can get to/actually have a record deal at all is if PRR themselves publicise this as best they can. If people don't hear anything from the band themselves then they don't hear anything full stop, which can lead to the band's fans drifting away. Now you can live with that if you're Portishead - you disappear for 10 years, but when you return with a new album then Radio 1, the NME and much of the other mainstream media outlets are shouting it from the rooftops. If you're PRR and you go quiet for 1 year then very few people are going to be waiting around when you come back. Don't mistake this for having a go at the band as they are at the moment: PRR have been reasonably good at keeping the fans in the loop for the last 2 months or so. However, I'll argue till the cows come home that for a band of their small profile and fanbase, the onus is on them to keep the fans up to date with what's going on. That's not an unreasonable demand: we're not clamouring to hear whether Chloe had a nice lunch on Wednesday or whether Jon's got a new leather jacket that he really likes. And I don't fancy the alternative: that we should all check these forums/their Myspace once a year and find out that they've had a new album out for 2 months and they've already played your town on their tour.
