I've always heard Avalon, even before I had the lyrics.

Same, I just didn't know if I was hearing it right or not.

I don't have the lyric booklet with me it's in Leeds...but one example I can think of off the top of my head is 'kissed by god, burnt ghosts' It just absolutely and utterly sounds like 'burnS ghosts' to me no matter how hard I listen to it...I know its pedantry really but still. It so sounded at first like "Kissed by goblins, ghosts and licked by devils hands". Probably more sensical than burnt ghosts but less poetic. My my, you and I are at odds tonight, TDF: you'll be telling me you're a Family Guy-watching Arsenal fan next... ;D Is it not possible to love both FG and Peep show? Family guy can be highly amusing... I mean the cover is one thing, I may be coming round to it, but the inside fold outs where the disks are...? With the white background? It's hiddeous. And the inlay booklet is just weird as hell, with the writing on the strange images so you can't read it, and the weird spacing thing which they copied from In Rainbows and didn't work there and doesn't work here. And why does it have loads of spelling mistakes? I mean one 'Dues' is a typo, but this is just weird...I understand the jist and the feeling that's aimed at but I think it could have been done much better. And I LOVE this album...! The "enoguh" typo in gloaming is really irritating, as is the "appauled" in apogee. It sounds really anal fanboy, but it's something someone could have sorted in 15 mins - god knows we've been waiting for this ever since TDT!

Avalon always seemed like "ever learn" to me: as in "did you feel love, did you ever burn, ever learn?"
And I'm fairly sure that it must be "burnt"; everything else is -ed/-t in that line.

I'm actually not convinced all the lyrics are totally right either, there are some that no matter how hard you listen, what they've got written there is definately gramatically different from what you hear. But isn't that also true with regards to TDT? E.g. Trembling Willows - "Carry Away This Severed Head!" says the lyric booklet. Does anyone else even remotely think that this is what they sing? I think it's true that they don't sing some words for aesthetic (btw, anyone know what the equivalent for this word is for aural) effect.

It can still make sense with "ever burn Avalon" as long as you don't take it too literally. Can't remember the Arthurian legend that well but could be symbolic of destroying your own peace for the sake of love. Or sumat. Analysing PRR lyrics; madness lies therein.

I always heard "Did you feel love, did you ever burn, ever learn?" which I think makes perfect sense, but whatever. In Les Malheurs, I am pretty sure I hear an "s" in "burns."
I do, however, like the more comprehensible lyrical approach they took with this album, though. Nothing against TDT, mind you!

Another one is in gloaming where they definitely sing "gloaming love surrounds now" but in the book it says "in the gloaming..." is this not cheating? You can't just write cool lyrics and then not sing bits of it cos it doesn't fit!! Bufoonery of the highest order indeed! Why do they spell altar with an e? Now I'm a bad speller, but....
I think because I love the music so much I have to find random unimportant stuff to criticise...

I can't even read the lyrics to know what they are! The font is soo small and the colour clashes with the background.

This reminds me of my youth and the teen pop magazine Smash Hits - they used to have a section where they would print the lyrics from songs in the Top 40, and it would always make me laugh to see what they came up with when the likes of Marillion and Iron Maiden got into the charts - they clearly were not supplied with the actual lyrics.
One I will always remember was a Marillion lyric from Assassing, 'listen to the blade', and they came up with 'listen to the punks play' ;D

Just youtubing and saw this www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ytlb-Njg8E If you go to 1.20, you can see the camera panning down the Twyncyn/Trembling Willows lyrics. Words like Severed are scratched out in the chorus, let alone the other marks. I'm sure someone else has already mentioned this but here is the video itself.

I think part a) - writing the awesome lyrics then trimming them down - is why they supply the full version in the album lyrics booklet, so that it does actually generally make (more) sense. And for part b) - consider that it is in fact just a play with words - that the authorial intent was that the altar might alter you; it doesn't fit all too badly with the song, and I personally like the theory (there again, I'm fairly convinced that it actually is just typos...) EDIT: and Al - thanks for finding that link

Nice link, because all I can hear is "Carry away this head," and I had to really listen just to hear that! They definitely don't say severed, but leaving it in the lyrics helps explain better what they're talking about.

Just watching the Victorious Cupid (at NEARfest) video on the DVD that came with the special edition version of Amor Vincit Omnia, and spotted something for the first time that made me laugh. At 00:53 in the VC video, Paul does a Doc Holiday-esque spin of his drumstick during a pause in the beat for seemingly no other reason than to look totally rock'n'roll! Mr Glover, I salute you, brilliant! ALL ABOARD THE SHOWBOAT...
